Biochemistry is the study of chemistry in living organisms, organic molecules, and how those molecules react. Those who study biochemistry are called Biochemists. The molecules biochemists study are: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Biochemists work in labs, plan and conduct experiments, and analyze and develop products. For example biochemists might help in the development of artificial sweeteners, or study the characteristics of keratin in hair to create a shampoo to enhance curliness or softness.
In North Carolina there are several universities that have a major in Biochemistry. University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, Queen’s University of Charlotte, Duke University, University of North Carolina Greensboro, East Carolina University, University of North Carolina State, and Wake Forest University all have a biochemistry major program. In the biochemistry field, a undergraduate bachelor’s degree will be qualified for positions such as a research assistant, inspector, or technical sales representative. A master’s degree in the biochemistry field will qualify for most positions in commercial industries such as food production, product development, and jobs in private marketing, sales, or administration. A PhD in biochemistry or chemistry is necessary in order to participate in or lead extreme research projects.
Biochemistry jobs can be found all throughout North Carolina. Jobs can range anywhere from research for health and beauty care, chemical manufacturing, food and drink production, medical instruments, and pharmaceutical development. There are several jobs options regarding biochemistry in universities, such as Duke University has a job opening in a classroom where the requirements are to assist in the development of new methods for analysis of biomolecular interactions, review journals, abstracts, and scientific literature to stay on top of new developments, and to obtain information regarding previous experiments to aid in the design and development of original procedures and techniques. Also KBI Biopharma, Inc. has a job opening which requires the ability to lead, design, and execute cell line development, clone screening, and clone selection for recombinant protein expression.
